Philip Wharton
PW

Philip Wharton offers lessons via Skype/FaceTime in violin, viola, and composition.

Thanks to his attention to detail and his extensive music training, he is able to address each student’s needs individually—whether it is building a well-balanced foundation of technique, or a high level of musical and technical concepts.

Among the benefits of streaming lessons are continuity of regular lessons and long-distance study with a preferred teacher.

As a teacher of composition, his goal is to help the student develop a distinct compositional voice. To accomplish this, Wharton begins with studies in 18th-century counterpoint to develop a sense of harmonic tension and the inevitability of resolution. In this way, students learn to sense even in non-standard or atonal harmonies that the western musical concept of tension and resolution still applies—music has greater effect upon the listener when composers exploit those possibilities.

As an established musician in NYC, Wharton’s teaching brings with it the depth of someone who has experience teaching people of diverse backgrounds.

His students have been accepted at major conservatories and have won national awards.
